A Day in Sderot and the Surrounding Areas
Tuesday, January 7
Our visit began in Kibbutz Zikim and extended to Sderot. Kfar Aza, and other nearby communities. The day was filled with inspiring encounters and unforgettable insights into the resilience and determination of those rebuilding their lives amidst challenges.
At Kfar Aza, we were profoundly moved by the dedication of 50-60 volunteers from across the country, all working tirelessly to restore the community following extensive destruction. These individuals embodied the spirit of solidarity, showcasing the power of collective effort to bring hope and healing.
One of the key sites we visited featured a large sign:
"The Green Floors Neighborhood"
• Initiative: A volunteer organization playing a vital role in supporting the civilian sector.
• Contractor: A well-known and highly regarded professional.
• Architecture: Designed by a prestigious architecture firm.
• Implementation: Israeli civilians.
The project was a testament to collaboration, turning an ambitious vision into a tangible reality.
As we continued our visit, the architect leading the project graciously invited us to join her in the dining hall. Although we politely declined, we decided to walk toward it and were greeted by a heartwarming scene. Inside, over 50 men and women of various ages were seated at round tables, sharing conversations and meals.
The atmosphere was vibrant, and the chef of the day, Yaakov, introduced himself. We learned that every day, a volunteer chef travels—sometimes from far away—to prepare meals for the team. One particular individual, a man in his fifties, has been a constant presence at the site, working tirelessly every day to offer assistance and ensure the success of the project.
This project includes the construction of 16 small housing units for young residents, addressing a critical need in the area. As we discussed the progress, we realized that most needs had been met, except for essential appliances such as small refrigerators and washing machines. Determined to contribute further, we began exploring options for providing these items as part of our humanitarian aid efforts.
This day served as a poignant reminder of the power of community and the importance of extending a helping hand. It was an honor to witness the passion, perseverance, and generosity that continue to drive such meaningful change.
